A large rare silver charger with inserted 16th and 17th century coins, central armorial crest, inscription reading; The coins inserted in the salver were discovered in the year 1899 during the excavation of the Caledonian Railway’s Company’s dock at Grangemouth and were presented by the company to Sir John Wolfe Barry K.C.B. under whose superintendence the dock was constructed. Further Goldsmiths Hall inscription to verso, hallmarked London, 1902, maker Garrard & Co. Ltd, approx.4000g, D.51cm. Buyer note: Sir John Wolfe Barry is most well known as being the engineer and designer of Tower Bridge, London.
